The Group currently has over 150 members. A good many of these do not themselves drive but assist with the organisation of events (stewards).
Stewarding is, one would think, a thankless task. They stand out in all weathers to time, or check, competitors coming through. It is often not possible for them to get their cars to where they must stand due to soft ground (not all have 4 wheel drive vehicles). However, without stewards there would be no sport. In return stewards spend a weekend in lovely surroundings, usually the parks attached to country mansions, free of charge and occasionally in good weather.
Competitors must also cross these parks during the cross country. We get to drive around some of the most beautiful parks in the country. Everyone has read about H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh turning over. We’ve all done it. Great fun, especially the fast bits. Actually, yes you do have to be mad.
The Group is always ready to welcome newcomers to the sport and will give drivers training, to ensure safety. Similarly we always welcome new stewards, in fact anyone is willing to help or compete and have an enjoyable and social weekend.
At last a use for that horse or pony that is eating your grass and is getting fat and lazy. Or do you fancy spending a free weekend or two in a country house park next summer? Why not join in with Horse Driving Trials. We hold several events throughout the summer in the Midlands and are always looking for new members and stewards.
Contact us now! Don’t wait till the summer when you have forgotten this. Write or E-Mail for more details to:
